Developments in HVDC technologies for renewable energy interconnection and integration

The fundamental approach to implement Net-zero is to massively integrate renewable energy sources into energy supply. With massive penetration of renewable energy into power systems, the system integration using HVDC technologies became a key solution. There are two HVDC technologies available in the market, namely LCC (Line Commutated Converter) HVDC and Voltage Sourced Converter based (VSC) HVDC.Traditional LCC HVDC system is the key technology for long distance bulk power transmission, which is considered to be the 1st generation HVDC technology. However, it has two serious shortcomings: not being able to control its reactive power and terminal AC voltages; and it is vulnerable to commutation failures. VSC HVDC is considered to be the 2nd generation technology that has the advantages of independent active and reactive power control; black-start capability and DC grid implementation. In this lecture, Xiao-Ping Zhang, Professor at University of Birmingham will present the developments in these HVDC technologies and show how they can be used in renewable energy interconnection and integration.
